Does anyone else think that because Chai means tea, that its redundant to say "Chai tea?" Because you are asking for Tea tea.
So chai spice tea is my absolute favorite tea of all time. And lately i have been wishing I could find a chai spice scented candle because I am not only in love with the taste of chai, but the scent. So instead of buying a candle already made, I am going to show you how to make your own!
According to the ingredients on most chai spice teas, there are many spices and chives that you will need to purchase. But to just spare you the search and hardship of getting the specific ingredients, I would suggest to just use a tea packet of chai spice tea. You can buy this at any grocery stores, and they come in different flavors (I just go for the classic chai spice) but you can choose whichever one you like.
What you will need:
1. Chai spice tea packet
2. 2 cups of vegetable oil
3. a teaspoon of vanilla extract
4. cinnamon (optional)
5. cloves
6. cardamom
7. anise seed
8. mortar or coffee grinder (you can also just put the spices in a plastic bag and crush them up with a mallet or spoon)
9. Microwaveable wax (you can get it at craft stores)
10. candle wicks
11. a glass jar, candle holder, etc. to put the candle in. OR you can use a mug or tea cup to make it more realistic! That is what I did.
12. a very fine strainer, or fine mesh and a rubber band
13. tape
14. 2 jars
What to do:
1. cut open the chai spice tea packet and poor it into a mortar or plastic bag. Then add the rest of the spices and mix/crush them together until you get a fine dust.
2. poor the spices, vanilla, and vegetable oil into a jar and put the lid on it. Shake the jar well and set it somewhere where it can sit for a day or two (periodically shake the jar to keep it from settling)
3. Take your jar or candle holder, and place a wick in the center and secure it with tape (just place one tip of the wick on the tape, and stretch the tape from one side of the glass to the other to secure it)
4. Setting up the strainer: take another jar and place the fine strainer over the top, or place a fine mesh or paper towel over the top and secure it with a rubber band. This will act as the strainer.
5. Take the jar with the oil and spice mix and poor a little bit at a time into the other jar. It will filter out the large pieces of spice, etc. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS STEP IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO. If you don't mind there being piece of cloves and spices in the candle, you can keep them there. I personally like them in there because I think it looks neater.
6. Heat up some of the wax in the microwave (follow the directions on the package)
7. Mix in the scented oil you made until you get your desired scent.
8. poor the mixture into the candle holders. Let sit for a couple of hours.
9. Remove the tape from the candle wick and you are done!
I hope you like the idea, because I was very excited when I figured out how to make them. I used a really ornate, sort of Indian-looking tea cup to make mine. I hope you have fun making yours~
